Volunteer Exhibition Officers- On Sharks and Humanity

  • Interested in providing guided tours to visitors in a customer service environment
  • Do you have an knowledge and/or interest in maritime issues
  • Do you have Good communication skills including the ability to communicate clearly with museum visitors

The Australian National Maritime Museum, Darling Harbour, is seeking volunteers to assist with the museum’s new free indoor and outdoor exhibition of contemporary art- On Sharks and Humanity.

On Sharks and Humanity is a thought-provoking contemporary art exhibition about shark protection showcasing work from some of China’s leading contemporary artists.

Volunteering provides an exciting opportunity to work alongside our museum staff in this beautiful exhibition, and assisting in the facilitation of guided tours and artmaking programs, gaining valuable experience in facilitating informal learning programs in a Museum context.

Volunteer Exhibition Officers will also have access to regular training opportunities, an access pass to the museum, discount at the Museum shop and YOTS restaurant.

The museum prides itself on providing quality, innovative programs for visitors of all ages. The successful applicants will be responsible for invigilating the safety of the artworks, assisting with public interpretation of the artworks and assisting with public programs activities including talks, tours and hands on workshops.

There is no financial reimbursement for this role.

Key Relationships:

Reports to Programs Coordinator, ANMM.

Desirable qualifications

  • Experience in working with diverse audiences including children and families.
  • Keen interest in/ study background in visual arts, art theory or ocean sciences.
  • Availability for regular half or whole day shifts on week days or weekends from 11th December 2018 to end May 2019.
  • Current Working with Children Check (volunteer level)
  • excellent oral communication and interpersonal communication skills

The successful candidates:

  • Must undertake a Federal Police Check.
  • Should be reliable and committed.
  • Should be flexible and innovative in their approach to program delivery, prepared to respond and adapt to changing circumstances

  • Informal phone interview/ meeting with ANMM staff from the 6th December.
  • Training afternoon 4pm – 7pm Monday 10th December or Tuesday 11th December 2018
