Katandra School is located in Ormond, taking enrolments for children within the local government areas of Kingston, Glen Eira, Monash, Bayside and some parts of Stonnington.
Katandra School provides individualised learning for all primary aged students with a mild Intellectual disability.
Katandra provides a caring and friendly environment, which is safe, calm, orderly and positive, allowing our students to thrive.
Special Education Teachers plan an individual educational program for every students. To provide an individual, positive experience, student strengths and interests are the basis for program planning.
To ensure our students are fully supported, our staff work as a team in all aspects of student learning. We allow for small class groups and employ a Speech Pathologist and an Occupational Therapist to support teaching and learning.
The Victorian Curriculum is used throughout the school. Our experienced staff use their expertise and knowledge of student development and the various modes of learning to modify the curriculum to fully engage students. This can be the catalyst to maximizing our students learning potential.
Katandra implements a School Wide Positive Behaviour Support program (SWPBS).
There are three key expectations taught and valued throughout the school:
Appropriate behaviours are explicitly taught, using video modelling, a common language and positive reinforcement throughout the school.
Students are offered a range of additional activities to build on the regular program.
Activities are varied to suit the student needs and interests, but can include swimming, dance, drama, gymnastics, horse-riding, gardening, bike education, Inter-school competitions, camps and excursions and a range of lunchtime activities.
SC 1. Demonstrated capacity to undertake routine and specialised teacher assistant support tasks across a range of work areas within a Special School environment.
SC 2. Demonstrated capacity to work co-operatively and communicate effectively within a team environment with a wide range of individuals including teachers, other support staff, therapists, parents and students.
SC 3. Demonstrated understanding of the principles of effective behaviour management for students with an intellectual disability who might exhibit severe challenging behaviours.
SC4. To have experience / willingness to give physical assistance with personal care/ self -care responsibilities.
SC 5. Demonstrated ability to contribute to school projects and support small groups of students following a range of educational programs as set by staff.
An education support class position supports the educational services being provided to students, but must not include duties of teaching as defined in clause 2.6.1 of the Education and Training Reform Act 2006 (Vic) or its successor. Supervision of students cannot be required except where it is an integral part of the employee's position or involves supervision of students individually or in small groups, in controlled circumstances, where the responsibility for students remains clearly with a teacher.
1. Assisting in preparation of the classroom materials for the daily programs.
2. Tidying the classroom and materials at the conclusion of each session.
3. Participate in the maintenance of the change/toilet/classroom/play areas to ensure a clean, tidy and safe environment.
4. Assisting with the supervision of the students both in the classroom and the playground.
5. Reporting observations of student behaviour to the teacher and assisting with the implementation of behaviour management programs.
6. Toileting the students, including cleaning and changing soiled students.
7. Assisting with the loading and unloading of students from their daily school transport.
8. Assisting with preparation and supervision of the students¿ morning teas and lunches plus cleaning up after meals.
9. To carry out other duties as allocated by the Principal which contribute to the wider safe and attractive school environment.
