The ACCC is an independent statutory authority that administers the Competition and Consumer Act 2010 and other Acts.
The ACCC works to promote effective competition and fair trading in the market place to benefit consumers, business and the community, and efficiency in the delivery of certain infrastructure services.
The Executive Office is a fast-paced environment where teamwork is highly valued. The role of Parliamentary Liaison Officer sits within the Parliamentary Liaison Team and manages the agency’s ministerial correspondence, as well as coordinating the weekly Commission meeting and other tasks.
As the Parliamentary Liaison Officer (PLO), you will coordinate responses from the ACCC’s line areas to correspondence received from Commonwealth, State and Territory Members of Parliament and Senators, and responds to requests for input to “Ministerials” from the Department of the Treasury. This role is responsible for administering the MLO inbox and database and contributes to process improvement.
As well as being the MLO, this role provides secretariat support to the Commission, including facilitating the occurrence of the weekly Commission meeting and taking the minutes at the Commission meeting. To fulfil this role, the successful applicant requires an ability to communicate effectively with staff at all levels across the agency, including Commissioners, and strong organisational skills.
The PLO will also be required to assist in the broader functions of the Parliamentary team, including producing a summary of issues arising from question time in the House of Representatives during sitting weeks, drafting correspondence, reporting, and assisting in the briefing of senior executives and parliamentary offices. These tasks may be required to be performed under time pressure.
Duties are to be performed under general direction and in accordance with the APS Code of Conduct, upholding the APS Values.
Working as a member of a small team and under the direction of the EL2 in the Parliamentary and Government Liaison Team, the role:
- Manages the workflows of ministerial correspondence and requests for input throughout their life-cycle, ensuring the delivery of timely, high quality responses.
- Maintains impeccable MLO records and produces regular and ad hoc reports.
- Proactively assists in the operation of a government parliamentary workflow system, including training new team members in the use of the Parliamentary Document Management System.
- Liaises with ACCC line area staff, Treasury and, at times, other Departmental or Ministerial staff to collate Question Time Briefs in a timely and accurate manner
- Drafting and updated Executive Office manuals and policies in relation to the ACCC’s Parliamentary-related activities.
- Drafts a range of correspondence, including responses to Parliamentary Committees.
- Produces a summary of issues arising from question time in the House of Representatives during sitting weeks, focussing particularly on issues of relevance to the ACCC.
- Liaises with line areas to collate and submit/distribute the Major Actions and Activities Report, the Legislative Development and Policy Proposals Executive Management Board paper, Law Council Report
- Work with the APS and EL1 in the Parliamentary Liaison team to develop a suitable work program for the Executive Graduate.
- Assists team members during absences and completes other tasks as required to support the work of the broader Executive Office.
