The position

This Research+ Postdoctoral Fellowship represents an outstanding opportunity to develop your research skills in the field of radio astronomy. In this position you will design and undertake an observing programme using the Australian Square Kilometre Array Pathfinder (ASKAP) facility, both through the allocated GASKAP project and through submitting proposals and undertaking Principal Investigator observations. Specifically, you will conduct observations of our Galaxy at 724 MHz to detect and characterise the polarimetric properties of carbyne in the Milky Way, including developing an expert-level understanding of the polarisation properties of the array.

You will have responsibility for compiling and processing data (inputting to pipeline development) and analysing the resultant data products. You will collaborate with the ASKAP team, contributing project leadership and your expertise in polarimetry and the interstellar medium. You will additionally collaborate with efforts to explore Radio Frequency Interference mitigation with purpose built SKA pathfinder technology on the Parkes radio telescope (potentially providing complimentary data to the ASKAP data). You will lead the scientific research, be responsible for the delivery of the science, work with theoreticians and global collaborators, to publish and disseminate the results of the study to national and international markets, in doing so raising the profile of the science and CSIRO in the SKA community.

Salary: AU$83K - AU$88K plus up to 15.4% superannuation

To be successful you will need:

  • A doctorate (or will shortly satisfy the requirements of a PhD) in astronomy, astrophysics or a closely related discipline.

Please note: To be eligible for this role you must have no more than 3 years (or part time equivalent) of relevant postdoctoral experience.

  • High level written and oral communication skills with the ability to represent the research team effectively internally and externally, including at national and international conferences.
  • A record of publications in quality, peer reviewed journals.
  • Demonstrated research interest and expertise in spectral line radio astronomy
  • Demonstrated experience of scientific (unix-based) computing
  • A record of science innovation and creativity, plus the ability & willingness to incorporate novel ideas and approaches into scientific investigations.
