Wimmera Base Hospital in Horsham, the largest entity within the multi-campus Wimmera Health Care group, is seeking an Anaesthetist with FANZCA (or postgraduate qualifications and experience in anaesthetics which meet ANZCA requirements for practising in this position) for one of its three Anaesthetic positions.
The Hospital is located 300 km north west of Melbourne in a progressive rural city with a population of 19,000. It is the Wimmera region’s major referral centre, serving 54,000 people. It has some 12,500 admissions and 4,600 operations annually. As well as anaesthetics, the Hospital has resident specialist services in surgery, general medicine, obstetrics & gynaecology, on-site pathology and radiology (including CT and MRI), plus visiting services in ENT, ophthalmology, oncology, geriatrics, urology, oral surgery, orthopaedics, neurosurgery, dermatology and psychiatry.
There has been a $40 million total redevelopment of the Hospital’s facilities in recent years. It has a modern theatre complex, including a day procedure unit, a five-bed intensive care unit, a subacute facility and high-quality emergency department and ward facilities. Close to 1,000 endoscopies are performed each year, and facilities are available for video endoscopy and dialysis.
The Hospital has 25 Hospital Medical Officers (13 interns & 12 registrars), 16 of whom are on rotation from The Royal Melbourne Hospital and five from the Austin Hospital. They include accredited registrar positions in medicine, surgery, emergency medicine and obstetrics. There is an active hospital medical officer teaching program and a medical staff postgraduate education program. In addition, the senior medical staff provide teaching to medical students on rotation from The University of Melbourne and Deakin University.
