About the Role

The primary purpose of this role is to provide the framework and foster the culture to keep our people safe. To lead the HSEQ team, providing specialist HSE support with the ultimate objective of assisting the Group HSEQ Manager and the business in delivering to our zero harm strategy.

The successful applicant will be responsible for supporting the Group HSEQ Manager to in the design, development, implementation, communication and co-ordination of Citywide’s HSE Framework and specific associated programs, including ensuring compliance with all relevant Health, Safety and Environmental laws.

Primary Responsibilities:

  • Manage and lead all organisational activities in relation to the HSE team
  • Provide support to the Group HSEQ Manager
  • Work with managers to ensure that safe systems of work are in place
  • Influence and motivate the organisation in the achievement of HSE agreed goals and standards
  • Using a collaborative and coaching approach, support operational and corporate staff in ensuring safe systems of work are implemented
  • Ensure all incidents are investigated promptly, escalated where appropriate, and action plans put in place and carried through, with a focus on root cause analysis
  • Provide advice and support to the organisation in undertaking risk assessments
  • Ensure highest standards of HSE are applied across the organisation and directly within your area of responsibility
  • Provide strategic direction and insights to the Group HSEQ Manager and senior leadership in respect to HSE
  • Monitor and report on appropriate lead and lag indicators, providing insights and commentary on trends, and drive programs to target change in areas that require improvement
  • Ensure all HSE policies, procedures, SWMS and SoPs are kept up to date, reviewed regularly, and communicated to the business
  • Monitor broader HSE trends and provide expert advice to the Group HSEQ Manager and Safety Leadership Group
  • Ensure knowledge of legislative requirements is kept current, that upcoming changes are communicated effectively, planned for, and implemented, ensuring compliance at all times
  • Support the Group HSEQ Manager in the development of an appropriate annual HSE strategic plan and budget, and ensure that all activities are performed within the approved targets
  • In consultation with the Group HSEQ Manager, and Operational leaders, prepare a rolling 180 day HSE plan in line with the annual strategic plan with active monitoring of progress towards required objectives
  • As required prepare written reports on progress of HSE objectives, for the Group HSEQ Manager and operations team
  • Champion the HSE strategy implementation throughout all areas of responsibility
  • Actively drive the development of a HSE culture based around the Citywide values
  • Develop a high performance team through effective leadership practices, coaching and delivery of performance feedback

Required Skills:

  • Tertiary qualifications in Health and Safety together with at least 5 years' experience in leading the Health, Safety and Environment function in a complex, high risk, blue collar environment
  • Significant operational Health, Safety and Environment experience applying risk management principles and developing Health, Safety and Environment systems and administration processes
  • Proven experience in writing and implementing Health, Safety and Environment strategies that deliver successful outcomes
  • Knowledge of ICAM or other root cause incident investigation methodology
  • Knowledge of Bowtie or other formal risk assessment methodology
  • Experience using MYOSH or other safety information systems to record hazards, incidents, audits and to track actions
  • Strong experience in presenting and influencing at executive level and across all levels of an operational organisation
  • Strong experience dealing with regulators and unions
  • Proven ability and experience in bringing regulation to life and adapting it to make it work for a business
  • Advanced understanding and proven practical application of legislation and best practice, balanced with business needs
  • High relationship, influencing and stakeholder management skills at all levels within an organisation
  • Strong team leadership and people development skills
  • A mature and pragmatic approach
