Artbank is a program of the Australian Government that directly supports contemporary artists through the acquisition of their work while actively promoting the value of Australian visual culture to both the public and private sectors. The Artbank collection of approximately 10,000 artworks is made available through a leasing program. Artworks from the Artbank collection are rented by private, commercial and government clients, and Australian embassies around the world.
Artbank is a program administered through The Arts Division, a division of the Department of Communications and the Arts responsible for programs and policies that ensure the sustainability of Australia’s arts and culture sector - supporting artistic production, protecting and strengthening cultural heritage and expression, and encouraging opportunities for public engagement with arts and culture.
The position of Coordinating Registrar is responsible for ensuring the application of best practice standards for the transportation, storage, handling and exhibition of the Artbank collection.
Registrars oversee all aspects of the transportation, handling, installation, and collection care of art objects under Artbank's purview - largely drawn from our permanent collection and occasionally including works on loan for temporary exhibitions. Registrars are also responsible for maintaining collection records, condition checking, inventory, general handling and care of objects including reporting of conservation related issues, insurance, packing and shipping and documentation through the collections management system.
The Coordinating Registrar will work with the Head Registrar, Art Consultants and Curators to facilitate physical and virtual access to collection store, the appropriate display of material and the installation of artwork for at client premises – in Melbourne. This is a newly created role that has the additional responsibility of coordinating the registration functions in Melbourne. It is a full time position for an experienced professional Registrar - ideally with experience working with contemporary art. This position is based in Collingwood, Melbourne.
