are within two hours driving time from Cairns.

CATHOLIC EDUCATION SERVICES – DIOCESE OF CAIRNS

Catholic Education Services – Diocese of Cairns (CES), consists of twenty-nine schools including twenty primary schools,
two Prep to Year 12 Colleges and seven secondary Colleges which includes a Flexible Learning College with campuses in
Cairns and Cooktown. All schools, except the dual campus Our Lady of the Sacred Heart School, Thursday Island and
Hammond Island, Weipa and Holy Spirit College, Cooktown campus, are within a two hour drive of Cairns.

CES is committed to building communities of learning that provide a safe, nurturing and academically challenging
environment for all students.

Leadership and strategic management of the system of schools is the responsibility of the Executive Director of Catholic
Education. Through a team of professionals the Executive Director manages and facilitates a number of significant and
particular delegations which include:

  • Support of the mission of the Church as delivered through Catholic Education
  • Support of schools by providing services that strengthen school capacity
  • Provision of leadership and forward planning to develop organisational capability
  • Distribution to schools of government allocated funds and their accountability
  • Monitoring of quality of schools and compliance/accountability with requirements of governments, Church and
parents
  • Within limits, provision of some centralised, specialised student services, where this is the most effective and

efficient approach.

PURPOSE OF THE ROLE

The Inclusive Education Teacher - Hearing Impairment works within the Wellbeing and Diversity Team which supports
the development and implementation of effective and contemporary pedagogy for students with diverse learning
needs.

The role and responsibilities of the Inclusive Education Teacher - Hearing Impairment is to develop capacity within
schools to cater for students with a hearing impairment in an inclusive educational setting. This involves promoting
contemporary principles of effective learning and teaching through curriculum, policies and work programs for effective
education of these students. The role facilitates the development of skills and practices of classroom teachers in
planning, preparing and delivering effective teaching and learning programs for students with hearing impairment.

This Inclusive Education Teacher Hearing Impairment will work as a diocesan specialist teacher across all schools
where hearing impaired students require services.

This position will work under the line management of the Senior Education Officer Diverse Learning. Processes will
also be in place to support the incumbent in this role to have professional links with other members of the multi-
disciplinary teams that operates within the auspices of Catholic Education Services and School Professional Learning
networks .

POSITION DESCRIPTION

Through the support of effective pedagogies, it is envisioned that all students will have equitable access to our Catholic
school communities so that they may be supported to reach their full potential in development of not only their physical
wellbeing but also their educational and faith journey.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

Typical duties performed may include, but are not limited to:

  • Contribute to the development of annual Diocesan planning for hearing impairment.
  • Work in collaboration with the Senior Manager Diversity to provide data to assist with reporting and planning in
the area of services for hearing impairment
  • Develop partnerships with school communities to maximise access to learning for students with hearing
impairment
  • Establish good communication pathways to ensure an effective and integrated approach to service delivery to
schools
  • Work with School Teams and Diocesan personnel to support school planning for hearing impaired students
  • Support schools to implement policies, procedures and guidelines specifically in the area of inclusive education for
students with hearing impairment
  • Work in collaboration with class teachers and Speech Language Pathologists to establish programs for listening,

speech, language and social communicative competence across the curriculum to ensure participation of hearing
impaired students

  • Respond to school requests and contribute to planning for both individuals and small groups
  • Design, implement and review auditory activities for listening, speech and language learning
  • Provide professional development and consultation at the individual, classroom and whole school level on activity
limitations and participation restrictions for hearing impaired students
  • Identify resourcing needs for hearing impaired students
  • Provide specialist curriculum support for hearing impaired students
  • Monitor and ensure effective use of sensory devices for students with hearing impairment
  • Interpret audiological data from relevant agencies
  • Consult with audiologists as part of the School Team
  • Advise on classroom acoustic management for all learners
  • Maintain ongoing professional learning specific to the field of deafness
  • Maintain professional accreditation with National Australian Association of Teachers of the Deaf
  • Network with external agencies and other professionals to ensure Diocesan schools and personnel are aware of

and can access required services
